SMS Essentials is Second Mission Shield’s practical-resource program. It collects, prepares, and directs donated goods toward veterans facing immediate needs, housing transitions, financial hardship, recovery-related instability, or the work of rebuilding a household.
The program includes basic household goods, furniture, bedding, hygiene supplies, clothing, kitchen items, seasonal necessities, and other useful resources that can reduce a real barrier in someone’s daily life.
SMS does not treat donated goods as miscellaneous inventory. Each accepted item must have a clear use, remain in serviceable condition, and be handled with the same respect we expect for the person who may receive it.
The purpose is simple: recover useful resources, manage them responsibly, and place them where they can serve again.

Who SMS Essentials May Support
SMS Essentials may assist veterans who are:
- Experiencing homelessness or housing instability
- Entering or returning to stable housing
- Leaving treatment, hospitalization, incarceration, or temporary placement
- Rebuilding after financial hardship or major life disruption
- Lacking basic hygiene supplies, clothing, or household necessities
- Participating in limited SMS outreach or support activities
- Referred through an appropriate partner or service connection
Availability depends on current inventory, volunteer capacity, transportation, and the nature of the request.
SMS Essentials is not a retail store, emergency-response service, furniture warehouse, or guaranteed source of household goods. The program provides practical assistance when suitable resources are available.
