The Relay is Second Mission Shield’s structured mentorship program, connecting veterans with steady guidance, lived experience, and practical support as they rebuild life after service.
Many veterans navigating recovery, reintegration, and long-term rebuilding are not looking for lectures or generic advice. They are looking for someone who has carried responsibility, made hard decisions, and learned how to keep moving forward with perspective, humility, and consistency.
Mentorship helps provide that steady presence.
SMS mentors walk beside veterans as they set goals, rebuild identity, strengthen accountability, and make practical decisions about the next chapter of life.
This support is rooted in experience, not authority. It is about helping someone move forward with clarity, structure, and confidence.
Mentorship provides something different from peer support. Peer support is built around shared experience and mutual connection. Mentorship adds perspective, guidance, and long-term direction from someone who can model stability and follow-through.
Some veterans are stable enough to move forward but still need help making decisions, setting goals, rebuilding confidence, or translating their strengths into civilian life.
Without steady guidance, progress can stall. Goals can stay vague. Confidence can fade. Good intentions can lose direction.
Mentorship changes that.
When veterans have access to steady guidance, they are better positioned to make intentional decisions, remain accountable, and build a life with structure and purpose.
Wisdom becomes most valuable when it is shared.

SMS Mentorship serves veterans who are ready for guidance, accountability, and long-term rebuilding support.
This program is for veterans who may be stable but still need direction, perspective, and structure as they rebuild identity, pursue goals, strengthen decision-making, or move into the next phase of life after service.
