Shields of Service: (S.O.S)

Community Service & Veteran Engagement

Shields of Service, or S.O.S. is Second Mission Shield’s community service and engagement program. It connects veterans with opportunities to serve, contribute, and lead within their communities while strengthening their own recovery and sense of purpose.

The program creates structured opportunities for veterans to participate in volunteer projects, community partnerships, and service initiatives that reinforce identity, responsibility, and connection.

Service restores direction. By contributing to something larger than themselves, veterans transform recovery progress into leadership, purpose, and lasting community impact.

Why It Matters

Recovery is strengthened when veterans rediscover purpose and responsibility. Many veterans leave military service with a deep desire to continue serving but lack clear pathways to do so in civilian life.

Without meaningful opportunities to contribute, isolation and loss of identity can take hold.

S.O.S. restores that pathway. By engaging veterans in service projects, community support initiatives, and collaborative outreach efforts, the program reconnects veterans with the sense of mission and belonging that service once provided.

What This Program Does

Community Service Engagement

• Organizes volunteer opportunities that support local communities
• Coordinates veteran-led service projects and outreach initiatives
• Encourages veterans to contribute their skills and leadership experience

Veteran Leadership & Participation

• Provides opportunities for veterans to lead community initiatives
• Encourages peer mentorship and team collaboration
• Strengthens confidence and purpose through structured contribution

Who It's For

Shields of Service is open to veterans who want to reconnect with purpose through meaningful service.

Participants may be in recovery, rebuilding stability, or simply seeking ways to contribute to their communities while staying connected to other veterans.

The program welcomes veterans who want to lead, volunteer, and take part in projects that create positive community impact.
